During one of the coldest months of the season for the past 20 years, the Washington DC VA Medical Center opens its doors to hundreds of homeless and at-risk Veterans for the Winterhaven Homeless Stand Down. On January 25 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m., the Washington DC Veterans Affairs Medical Center will be a Winterhaven for Veterans, offering one-on-one assistance with health care, benefits and access to more than 70 community and government resources.
Winterhaven is a proactive, preventative outreach event to engage Veterans in rehabilitative activities, programs and services to propel them forward, according to CEO and Medical Center Director Brian A. Hawkins. The event is hosted and coordinated by the DC VA Medical Center with the partnership of veteran service organizations; federal, local and state agencies, corporate sponsors and community stakeholders.
Veterans will be offered a full day of services to include health screenings, substance abuse counseling, psychosocial services, dental exams, HIV testing, housing and employment assistance. Winterhaven attendees will also be able to access resources to assist with foreclosure avoidance, finance management and education and career training programs. Eligible Veterans will also receive free haircuts, comfort and hygiene items free warm clothing and a warm meal.
This year’s Winterhaven Homeless Veterans Stand Down will be held at the Washington DC VA Medical Center located on 50 Irving St., NW in Washington, DC. Winterhaven is an entry point for services that lead Veterans to independence and improved health. It is an integral part of the Department of Veterans Affairs’ goal to end Veteran homelessness by 2015.
Veterans who wish to attend the event will be offered free transportation from Metro’s Brookland/CUA Station. The DC VA Medical Center buses will be accessible in the shuttle pick-up/drop-off area.
