(ABC)–It was a humiliating home defeat of record proportions that no Brazilian could have seen coming.
Germany handed Brazil its heaviest World Cup loss ever on Tuesday with an astounding 7-1 rout in the semifinals that stunned the host nation.
The onslaught of goals by the powerful Germany team quickly deflated the Brazilian football faithful who packed into the stands to watch the match.
“We apologize to all Brazilians,” said Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari afterwards. “I’m sorry we could not get to the final.”
With its defense collapsing early and nobody able to spark the attack, Brazil conceded four goals in a seven-minute span in the first half and then trailed 5-0 at half time.
Miroslav Klose scored a record-setting 16th career World Cup goal in Germany’s five-goal spurt in the first half as Brazil’s defense was torn apart.
Toni Kroos and Andre Schuerrle scored two goals each for Germany, while Thomas Mueller and Sami Khedira added the others.
Oscar pulled a late goal back for Brazil.
Germany scored the most goals and the biggest margin of victory ever in a World Cup semifinal. The Germans will now face either Argentina or the Netherlands in Sunday’s final at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro.
For Brazil, it was the heaviest ever loss in terms of goals conceded, and equaled the margin of its previous worst defeat – a 6-0 loss to Uruguay in 1920.
Brazil was playing Tuesday without the injured Neymar and suspended captain Thiago Silva.
As a result, the Brazilian team appeared rudderless. Fans were in shock, some leaving way before the final whistle.
“We got lost a little bit there,” Brazil’s stand-in captain David Luiz said. Germany “realized the game was there for the taking and scored the goals. It’s very difficult to explain right now. The dream is over, in a way that the people didn’t want.”
Seven years after winning the bid to host the tournament, the five-time champions from Brazil now know that they can finish no higher than third place. The playoff – some argue the cruelest of the World Cup matches – is Saturday against the loser of the Netherlands- Argentina semifinal.
