(CBS)–The National Organization for Women is calling for NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to resign, following the suspension of Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice from the NFL.
In a press release Wednesday, NOW says the NFL has mishandled multiple domestic violence cases, including the Ray Rice case. They have cited the league’s failure to suspend San Francisco 49ers defensive end Ray McDonald, who is facing a domestic violence charge and Carolina Panther defensive end Greg Hardy after he was convicted of choking and threatening to kill his former girlfriend.
It also mentions the NFL’s silence on accusations that Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones sexually assaulted a woman. The organization says the only solution to the “violence against women problem” is for Goodell to resign.NOW says that new leadership can help restore honor and change the “culture of violence” in the NFL.NOW also wants the NFL to appoint an independent investigator to examine domestic violence issues within the league and recommend reforms.
“The NFL sets the example for college, high school, middle school and even elementary school football programs. And the example it is setting right now is simply unacceptable,” said NOW President Terry O’Neill.
