On February 21, Verizon held a recognition event for the student team from Howard Middle School of Mathematics and Science that was named Best in State of the Fifth Verizon Innovative Learning App Challenge. The event included the School Principal, Mrs. Kathryn Procope, student advisor Hector Telford, Verizon representatives and more than 100 students at the school auditorium. The principal recognized Verizon support to the school and students, and highlighted how our support is motivating students to innovate and work as a team to apply their STEM skills.
The special recognition included a brief app concept presentation by the students, the official presentation of the tablets and certificates to each of the students, and a $5,000 check presentation to the school (which will support STEM education programs).
Mario Acosta-Velez, Verizon’s Director of State Government Affairs said: “ When I asked the students in the auditorium how many would like to pursue a career in STEM such as becoming an engineering, more than 2/3 of the students raised their hands. This shows how our Verizon Innovative Learning programs and support for STEM education are motivating students to become future creators and consider STEM careers as part of their future”.
