Over 14,000 Returns Filed for DC, MD & VA Residents Last Year, Totaling more than $16 Million in Tax Refunds
United Way of the National Capital Area (United Way NCA) announced today a partnership with area nonprofits in the region this tax season to provide free, professional tax preparation services to residents throughout the Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia metro areas.
Now through April 18th, hundreds of IRS certified volunteers are on hand at tax preparation sites throughout the region to assist thousands of area residents this tax season through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program.
Residents throughout the National Capital Area, who earned less than $64,000 in 2016, may be eligible to have their tax returns filed for free. Those who earned less than $53,000 may also qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). The Earned Income Tax Credit is considered an important tool in fighting poverty but is a frequently overlooked benefit. While the DC metro area has one of the highest percentages of eligible filers taking advantage of the credit, there are still thousands of households not receiving their maximum refund, either because they are unaware of the EITC, or don’t have access to the tax services to help them apply for it. United Way NCA volunteer tax preparers can help qualified tax filers to navigate the eligibility requirements. Last year United Way NCA’s program helped to return $6 million in refunds to the community from the EITC alone.

“Last year, we mobilized hundreds of IRS certified volunteer tax preparers who successfully assisted and filed over 14,000 tax returns for area residents totaling more than $16 million in tax refunds,” said Timothy Johnson, Vice President of Community Impact, United Way of the National Capital Area. “Over the past nine years, our free tax preparation services have helped working families and individuals in the area receive more than $100 million in tax refunds and credits owed to them. We are determined to ensure that all of our residents have access to free, professional and accurate tax preparation services.”
United Way of the National Capital Area has partnered with ECDC Enterprise Development Group, Capital Area Asset Builders, Coalition for the Advancement of Financial Education (CAFE) Montgomery and the United Way NCA’s Financial Empowerment Center at Prince George’s Community College (FEC) to provide low- to moderate-income families throughout the region free tax preparation assistance to file their tax returns, helping families to maximize their available tax refunds and gain access to the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC).
Support for United Way NCA’s FEC, financial coaches and experts are made possible by the SunTrust Foundation, which is the largest grant awarded to a single market and will go toward supporting the FEC located on the Prince George’s Community College Largo Campus.
