(BlackNews.com) — A new cultural movement to help children overcome and defeat racism has been born. Watoto Entertainment & Education (a.k.a. “I Am WEE Nation), is a cultural movement of artists dedicated to creating and performing music for children of African descent, which provides them with child-appropriate and self-affirming music that will enhance their social and cultural development. It is a necessary alternative to inappropriate adult music. Watoto is an African Swahili word that means “children.”
Their goals are:
-To use the children’s music genre to help prepare children of African descent and beyond to overcome and defeat racism, sexism and all forms of bigotry in the world
– To create a friendly petition to the NAACP Image, Soul Train and BET Awards, respectively, requesting that they add Children’s Music as one of their award categories.
-To establish a nationwide radio program entitled, “I Am WEE Nation Radio” that will focus on music programming for children of African descent.
-To recruit and retain “I Am WEE Nation” artists by providing professional development in the form of workshops, discussions and mentorship.
Childrens music is one of the fastest growing music genres in the United States and is defined as music composed and performed for children. However, today’s children’s music scene in the United States is dominated by children’s artists who play rock, pop, country and folk music. These genres, while open to anyone, generally caters to the majority white community. This includes most children’s music radio stations, as well.
According to childrens music artist and I Am WEE Nation” founder, Devin Walker (a.k.a. Uncle Devin), The children’s music scene in the Black community is virtually non-existent. Moreover, we do not regulate what children of African descent listen to when it comes to music. Much too often, children are forced to listen to inappropriate grown-up music that involves sex and violence, and does not help them grow socially or culturally. I Am WEE Nation is offering an educational and entertaining musical option for children that will help our children know, love and do for themselves.
I Am WEE Nation, provides age-appropriate music of all genres, including Hip-Hop, Funk, Jazz, R&B, Go-Go, Folk, Country, Gospel, Reggae, Salsa and much more – all for children.
