-On Thursday, July 27th at 6:30pm, Neighborhood Impact will address an important social justice of our time, mass incarceration. This event, Social Enterprise, An Economic Pathway to Justice, will explore how social enterprise can be a bridge to community wealth creation as well as a catalyst to address the opportunity gaps in underserved communities.
Impact Hub DC and Social Solutions are partnering on the Neighborhood Impact initiative in an effort to reduce the rates of mass incarceration in Washington, D.C. and make a pivotal social impact in the community. We believe that organic solutions exist to the high incarceration rates that in DC’s most marginalized communities when there are more opportunities in the areas of gainful employment, affordable housing, affordable healthcare, a quality education, and a strong community infrastructure. Therefore, the purpose of this initiative is to lead the community in the development of social businesses that address the opportunity gaps which are the systemic causes of mass incarceration in our community.
Social Enterprise, An Economic Pathway to Justice is the first in a series of events that will bring together community leaders to educate the public on the root causes of the concentration of high incarceration rates in underserved communities,, and will feature a human centered design activity to get input from the public on the development of a social business incubator that addresses the the problem at a systemic level. In essence, we seek to tackle this intractable problem through human-centered design and entrepreneurial models that not only create wealth, but foster systemic social change. The social enterprise business incubator program will launch the first quarter of 2018.
