Seven-week season features the best of children’s music, dance, theater and more. Season features Wolf Trap debuts from Grammy winners, and veterans from Blue Man Group, They Might Be Giants, and more
Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts announces its 2018 season lineup for Children’s Theatre-in-the-Woods. The 2018 season begins with Wolf Trap first-timers Michael & The Rockness Monsters, featuring Blue Man Group veteran Michael Napolitano. Nine acts make their Children’s Theatre-in-the-Woods debuts this summer, including Bollywood dance company Rhythmaya Dance, renowned Spanish singer-songwriter Sonia De Los Santos, and Danny Weinkauf and his Red Pants Band, which features long-time They Might Be Giants bassist Danny Weinkauf. Returning favorites include David Engel with Harry Potter and Willy Wonka-themed performances, and high flying hip-hoppers FLY Dance Company.
This summer also includes the return of Listen, Wilhelmina!, which was commissioned in 2017 by Wolf Trap Foundation for the Children’s Theatre-in-the-Woods. The project brings together two of the Foundation’s mission-based programs: Wolf Trap Opera, one of the nation’s premier training grounds for young professional singers, and Wolf Trap Institute for Early Learning Through the Arts, a nationally recognized leader in early childhood arts-based learning.
After each performance, children and parents are encouraged to continue enjoying the free and open space within Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts with Stay and Play . After select shows, children can also enjoy nature-based activities with Wolf Trap National Park’s Junior Ranger program, as well as take part in interactive and hands-on lessons with performers in small-group workshops. Select dates for Junior Ranger programs and workshops can be found on the Children’s Theatre-in-the-Woods calendar.
Since 1971, Children’s Theatre-in-the-Woods has been a Washington-area summer tradition for children and their families, featuring live performances and diverse acts including puppetry, storytelling, dance, theater, and music. Situated in the heart of Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts, the open-air Children’s Theatre-in-the-Woods welcomes families, school groups, camps, caregivers, and their young ones, and often serves as children’s first live performance experience. Performances can be enjoyed Tuesday through Saturday mornings at 10:30 a.m., beginning June 19 and running through August 4. Tickets are $8 – $12 and children under two may attend free of charge.
Through its Community Service Ticket program, Wolf Trap Foundation participates with local nonprofits serving children and families who are economically disadvantaged and individuals with special needs by providing thousands of complimentary tickets to select Children’s Theatre-in-the-Woods performances. For more information about the Community Service Ticket program, visit the website.
Wolf Trap also continues its family access initiative for select Filene Center performances. The Young at Arts program invites families to connect with the arts and with each other by offering free 17-and-under tickets for select performances.
